Independent Writing Project on Coming of Age

Question:
What are the main similarities and differences between childhood and adulthood?

 Differences:
-Adults are able to take care of themselves.
-Children have to depend on their parents to take care of them.

-Adults have to work and support themselves and their family.
-Children can work, but don't have too. They go to school instead of work.

-Adults work, clean, cook, pay bills, buy everything for the children, pay bills, etc.
-Children can just ask for stuff, instead of working hard for it.

-Adults have already learned life lessons
-Children are still growing up and have lots to learn.

Similarities:
-Have responsibility
-Learn from mistakes
-Grow up
-Act mature
-Work.
For example, adults  have a job, and children have chores, homework and other stuff to do.
-Responsibility.

Revised Romeo and Juliet Essay

“O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?” The play “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespheare is about 2 main families; the Montagues and the Capulets. Both families have this hate towards one another.  Romeo is a montague and Juliet is a Capulet, both Romeo and Juliet fall in love with one another, but since their parents are enemies, their love is forbidden. The forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet relationship is similar and different to how today's relationships are now.
In the play, Romeo and Juliets love was forbidden because their families hated each other My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, that I must love a loathèd enemy.” Juliet said when she first found out that Romeo was a Montague.
Juliet’s parents wanted her to marry Prince Paris. Juliet didn't want to marry Paris; she wanted to marry Romeo instead. “But fettle your fine joints’ gainst Thursday next to go with Paris to saint Peter’s Church, Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither. Out you green sickness carrion! Out you baggage! You tallow face” Lord Capulet (Juliet’s father) said to Juliet. Lord Capulet (Juliet's father) is forcing Juliet to marry Paris on Thursday. Juliet told her parents she didn't want to marry him, but they didn't care. She was going to marry Prince Paris whether she wanted to or not. Some reasons why love is forbidden today is because sometimes parents don’t approve of the person the son/daughter is in love with, parents already planned an arranged marriage or because of different races and cultures.
Forbidden Love can have many consequences. For example, because Romeo and Juliet’s love was forbidden they both died. They couldn't live without each other so they both committed suicide. Suicide is a big consequence. Other consequences would be running away, sneaking around taking risks, secretly getting married and many more.
Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is similar and different to today’s society. They are similar because people fall in love, families hate each other making their kids hate the other family also, parents still have arranged marriages, and couples still sneak out to see each other. They are different because instead of sneaking around, people now a day can text, email or use any social website to communicate with one another. Also most people don’t confess their love to each other right away after they just met.  Love shouldn't be forbidden for some people. We should all be able to love who ever we want to love.

Non-Fiction Response Post #15

I have just finished reading "Bad for Breathing" by Stephen Ornes. The article was about how pollution can cause diseases for the lungs and airways. Inhaling pollution can cause trouble breathing. In can cause asthma. Asthma is a condition that can cause difficulty in breathing, and is sometimes triggered by an allergy. Kids who are exposed to high levels of poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAH are most likely to have have asthma.
When a asthma attack occurs, your small airways in the lungs start to swell, which reduces how much air you can receive.  Which means that the person is going to have a very hard time drawing in air to breathe normally.

Non fiction Response. Post #14

I have just finished reading the article "When The Nose No Longer Knows" by Roberta Kwok. It was about how pollution hurts animals. It can damage their ability to smell. Clown fish are probably the fish who are most in danger of the pollution. Why? Because The clown fish don't run away from the scent of pollution, instead they go towards it.
The pollution in the water can kill the fishes. Fish have neurons. And because these neurons are exposed to the environment in the water, the fish are very sensitive to changes.Any chemical in the water can affect the fishes nose. Copper in the water is bad. It can steal the fishes sense of smell. And if the fish can't smell, it can lead them to death. Other animals in the ocean can get hurt too. For example Crabs can get hurt too. Crabs who are exposed to acidified water, had a lot of trouble finding food and another shell to be in.
We should help clean the oceans clean because we don't want the animals who live in the water to die right? We should keep the animals protected by not polluting the ocean.

Reading Response post #13

I have just recently started the book " The Day Before" by Lisa Schroeder, and in the book, a girl named Lisa wakes up really early on day, and takes off to go to an adventure by her self. The only things she took were extra clothes, drumsticks, camera, and a box of jelly beans. She was going to invite her friend Madison, but then she thought even though she was by herself, it was going to be better just being alone.
On her adventure, she decides to go to the aquarium at 10 .She studies the sharks and the jelly fishes, and then she meets this boy. They explore the aquarium together, and Amber really wants to know him. They have many things in common and they were just meant to be with one another. They both escaped from their world, to just enjoy their day. They have agreed not to say the reasons why they are there. When they were building a sand castle, Amber decides to ask Cade to take a picture of him. They flip a coin, and then Amber takes the picture. He gets pretty upset afterwards, but Amber doesnt know why. Maybe its a bad memory, or maybe he remembers the times he had with his whole family until his parents got a divorce. hmmm...

Non-Fiction Response post # 12

I have recently read an upfront magazine, and there was an article inside called "Is gender-based pricing fair?" This article has two sides of the argument. One person stated his reasons why he thought it was fair, and the other person stated why he thought it wasn't fair. For the yes it's fair section by Mike Durant, he said it was fair because its not the same service. He gave examples such as cleaning a male's shirt is easier than a woman's because it has no ruffles or delicate buttons, and giving a man a haircut is easier and quicker than a woman. For the no its not fair section by Jonathan Mintz, he said businesses cant discriminate their pricing. He said the price shouldn't matter based on what gender you are.
A reason why i would agree with the yes it is fair side is because the businesses do have a right on deciding the prices they charge. "This is how the free market works: Businesses are free to charge whatever price they think will bear for their goods or their services."(Durant 23)
They charge it by how long it takes to do. If one takes 5 minutes, and the other an hour, you would charge the 5 minute one less because it was easier and faster than the other one. That seems pretty fair. Mike Durant, New York State Director believes gender-pricing is fair because the service that each business gives to a gender, isn't the same to the opposite gender, so they should charge differently.
Another reason why i would agree with the yes its fair section is because, in the article it said "The same service for women often isn't really the same" and i totally agree with that. When you go to a hair salon, both man and women would be getting a hair cut. But they wont be getting the same kind, the women would ask for a layered hair cut, meaning it would take longer, and the man would be just a simple buzz. So they have a reason to charge different prices. Although in the no section they said, "If businesses want to charge diffferent prices, they need to have legitmate, nondiscriminatory reasons for the differences. Chromosomes are not reasons" (Mintz 23), the businesses can come up with whatever price they feel is right because its THIER business, and the costumers decided wheather or not they like it. And if they don't like it, they could go to another store.
Every business can have a different business for everything. After reading this article, i have decided that in my opinion, gender-based pricing is fair. In most stores they charge women higher prices, and i think its fair because the woman's service that they are asking for is more complex and takes time to do. On the other hand the guys job is easier because they don't ask for too much.

Choosing our own focus POST #11

I have recently finished the book "art geeks and Prom Queens" by Alyson Noel. My focus that I'm choosing is bullying and how the main character in my book dealt with it. Rio is the main character, and she has just recently moved from New York all the way to Southern California. Being the new student was hard for her, she got detention the 1st week she arrived. But she did meet meet new people. Jas (Jasper) and Mason were her first friends. They weren't exactly in the popular group, more like the geeks. Kristi was the popular girl. Everyone admired her, including Rio. When she gets the chance to become closer to her, she takes the risk and leaves Jas and Mason behind.

Hanging out with the popular girls, Kristi, Kayla, and Jen Jen, has changed Rio. Instead of Kristi being the most popular girl in the school, it became Rio. That's how all the bad stuff started. Kristi then made out with Rios boyfriend and also stole him away, called her names, wrote on her locker and also put dog poop inside her locker. Rio didn't tell anyone. She didn't know what to do, until one day when she decided to tell her mother. Her mom didn't believe her because she always thought Kristi was sweet, but she believed her daughter more. She offered to go talk to the principal, and even sue them. But Rio decided it was time to stand up for herself. The next day, Rio confronts Kristi.
"Look i say, anxious to get to the point before i lose my nerve completely. "I don't know what i did to make you guys hate me so much, but I'm asking you to stop. Stop spreading rumors, stop sending me nasty e-mails and text messages, stop throwing stuff at me, calling me names, and stop writing stuff on my locker and filling it with dog shit."There i said it, now i can breathe again.

After saying that to Kristi, most people weren't scared to confront her anymore. The next day more and more people were standing up for themselves. Rio used to be a follower. But after that, she was now a leader. Instead of Rio calling Kristi names back, and doing the stuff back to her, she stood up for herself and told her to stop. When her friendship with Kristi ended, she learned who her real friends were. Jas, and Mason. They never stopped caring for Rio even after she abandoned them. Having real friends is better than having fake friends and being popular.
